Getting Started

Prerequisites

Installation

  1. Clone the repository

    git clone <repository-url>

  2. Copy environment template

    cp .env.example .env
    

    The defaults support Docker-based development. Adjust values as needed for local tooling or deployment pipelines.

  3. Start the application with Docker (recommended for parity) This single command builds the images, starts all services, runs database migrations, and seeds the database with sample data.

    docker-compose up --build
    
  4. Access the application

    • Frontend: http://localhost:12000
    • Backend API: http://localhost:3001 (from host) or http://merchantsofhope-supplyanddemandportal-backend:3001 (from other containers)
    • Database: merchantsofhope-supplyanddemandportal-database:5432 (inside Docker network)

Environment Variables

The backend now derives its DATABASE_URL automatically when the POSTGRES_* variables are present. The following additional variables are available:

Testing

Quality Gates & Tests

npm run lint and npm test must pass in both the backend and frontend. By default, the backend Jest suite bootstraps a disposable Postgres instance via Docker (using docker-compose.test.yml), so Docker must be available on your workstation. To point the tests at an existing database (e.g., CI runners), set USE_DOCKER_TEST_DB=false and supply DATABASE_URL/POSTGRES_*.

Quick commands:

To mirror CI in one shot, run the helper script from the repository root:

./scripts/run-ci-tests.sh

The script executes linting followed by the backend and frontend test suites (each with coverage reporting). Coverage thresholds are enforced by Jest to guard against regressions. The helper waits for the ad-hoc PostgreSQL container, honours the backend entrypoint (which now blocks on database readiness, runs migrations, and optionally seeds), and then runs both suites with coverage thresholds enforced.

Continuous Integration

Gitea Actions configuration lives in .gitea/workflows/ci.yml. It:

  • Runs backend and frontend unit tests on every push or pull request.
  • Builds Docker images on pushes to the main branch, ready to publish to a registry (requires REGISTRY_* secrets).
