f1cf948356 Enable markdown support in Sphinx configuration 
The upstream Contributor Covenant is a markdown document.  Since we
prefer to keep things close to the original, enabling markdown support
to render that document seems like a good idea.

013388981c Fix intermittent failing test on PyPy hopefully. 
PyPy does not have refcounts, so files were only being closed when GC happened,
which meant their buffered writes never hit disk.
