As per: http://cgit.uclibc-ng.org/cgi/cgit/uclibc-ng.git/commit/Makefile.help?id=044843f002f666db3bc06c513ed6291a00ad1225 CROSS= is for compatibility, but we plan on dropping older uClibc versions, and adding uClibc-ng and uClibc-snapshot support. Crosstool-NG 
Crosstool-NG follows the autoconf dance. So, to get you
kick-started, just run:
./configure --help
If you are using a development snapshot, you'll have to create the configure script, first. Just run:
./bootstrap
